Does Stanford Accept Duolingo English Test?

01-02-2025

Stanford University does not require applicants to submit English proficiency test scores, including the Duolingo English Test, TOEFL, or IELTS, as part of the application process. However, applicants may choose to submit these scores if they believe it helps demonstrate their English proficiency. This option is commonly used by students whose first language is not English or whose secondary education was not conducted in English.

Stanford's Stance on English Proficiency Exams

Stanford University does not require any specific English proficiency exams, including TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English Test, for its application process. According to Stanford’s official statement:

"No, we do not require any English proficiency exams. While these exams (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, etc.) are useful in helping us determine our applicants’ English proficiency, you may feel your fluency will be clear in other aspects of your application. We have no preferred proficiency exam. Generally, we receive English proficiency exam results from applicants whose native language is not English and/or the primary language of instruction at their secondary school is not English. Please note that fluency in English is a prerequisite for admission to Stanford."

The university evaluates applications holistically, meaning there is no strict requirement for any specific test or score. Instead, Stanford focuses on understanding the applicant’s overall academic and personal profile.

Who Should Submit an English Proficiency Test?

Although it is not mandatory, Stanford generally receives English proficiency test scores from applicants whose:

l Native language is not English.

l Primary language of instruction at their secondary school is not English.

Submitting an English proficiency test like the Duolingo English Test can be particularly helpful if you want to demonstrate your language skills clearly. It can complement your application by offering a standardized measure of your English proficiency.

In summary, while Stanford does not mandate any specific English proficiency exam, fluency in English is a prerequisite for admission. This is critical for succeeding in an environment where instruction, discussions, and interactions are conducted in English. Therefore, if your English proficiency is not evident through other parts of your application, submitting a strong score on an English proficiency exam, such as the Duolingo English Test, can enhance your candidacy.
