How It's Scored

Your performance across all 6 questions directly impacts these primary subscores:

Speaking

Measures your ability to articulate thoughts clearly, maintain a natural conversational pace, and use correct pronunciation over a dynamic dialogue.

Conversation

Evaluates your listening comprehension combined with your speaking ability. Can you accurately hear a question once and respond appropriately on the spot?

Production

Assesses your ability to quickly generate relevant, varied vocabulary within the short 35-second window. It rewards elaborating on your answers right away rather than giving brief 'yes' or 'no' responses.

Deep Dive: Navigating the Conversation

Taking Agency: The 'Click to Record' Button

After the character speaks, you will see a countdown timer before the microphone automatically starts recording. Do not passively wait for this timer to reach zero. If you have processed the question and are ready to speak, confidently click 'Click to Record.' Taking agency shows conversational fluency and saves you from awkward, silent waiting.

The 'No Replay' Rule

Unlike the listening tasks where you can replay audio multiple times, in Interactive Speaking, you only hear the character's question once. If you miss a word or momentarily lose focus, do not panic. The worst thing you can do is stay silent. Listen for the core context clues and give the most relevant answer you can formulate. The AI rewards active participation and attempting to maintain the dialogue.

Topic Development & Conversational Fillers

Because you only have 35 seconds to speak, every second counts. Avoid starting your sentence immediately if you have not formulated a clear thought. Instead, deploy natural conversational fillers such as 'That's a really interesting point, actually...' or 'I haven't thought about it from that angle, but...'. These phrases buy your brain precious seconds to generate vocabulary while still demonstrating high-level spoken fluency. Once you start your main point, force yourself to provide at least one direct example or personal consequence to fully flesh out the topic before the timer runs out.

Practice Strategies

  • 1

    The 'Buy Time' Strategy

If you need a moment to think of a complex answer, start with a natural conversational filler like 'That's a really interesting question, actually...' This prevents awkward silence while your brain works.

  • 2

    Embrace the Roleplay

Treat the AI character like a real person over a video call. Use natural intonation to sound engaged rather than reading a robotic script from memory.

  • 3

    Speak to the Max

You have up to 35 seconds per answer. Do not give simple 'Yes' or 'No' responses. Always elaborate, provide a reason, or offer an example to use as much of the time window as possible.

DO

  • Maintain steady eye contact with the screen to simulate a real conversation.
  • Click 'Click to Record' if you are ready, rather than sitting in silence waiting for the auto-record.
  • Speak clearly and at a normal, natural volume.

DON'T

  • Do not panic and stay silent if you misunderstood a word; guess the context and keep speaking.
  • Do not try to memorize and recite generic, pre-written templates; the AI detects unnatural pauses.
  • Do not look off-screen or down at your desk while listening or speaking.
